Although there had been other attempts for a basketball league, none have succeeded, the BAA was the first league to attempt to play primarily in large arenas in major cities. The league adopted the name National Basketball Association on August 3, 1949, after merging with the competing National Basketball League.
In 1950, the NBA consolidated to eleven franchises, a process that continued until 1953–54, when the league reached its smallest size of eight franchises: the New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, Philadelphia Warriors, Minneapolis Lakers, Rochester Royals, Fort Wayne Pistons, Tri-Cities Blackhawks, and the Syracuse Nationals, all of which remain in the league today. Of course, the names and cities have changed, basically the smaller cities to larger cities. The process of contraction saw the league’s smaller-city franchises move to larger cities. The Hawks shifted from the Tri-Cities to Milwaukee in 1951, and then to St. Louis in 1955. The Rochester Royals moved from Rochester, New York, to Cincinnati in 1957 and the Pistons relocated from Fort Wayne, Indiana, to Detroit in 1957.
During the early days of basketball, there was not the best competition, a few shining stars such as Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russel (of course Hall of Famers) which became two of the greatest players in basketball history. It was a very standard game of dribble up and down, shoot your two points and keep it going. Once 1979 came around, the league implemented the 3-point line, which really changed the game forever. That same year, rookies Larry Bird and Magic Johnson joined the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers respectively, initiating a period of significant growth in fan interest in the NBA throughout the country and the world. In the 10 seasons of the 1980s, Johnson led the Lakers to five titles in eight Finals while Bird led the Celtics to three titles in five Finals.
These were the golden days of the NBA, 1984 is where the landscape of the game changed forever. Entering as some people say the greatest player of all time, Michael Jordan. Michael Jordan was the most dominant player of his generation, in the early stages of his career he had the struggle of the mighty Detroit Pistons, but once he got over the hump it was three straight championships. He retired for a couple of years due to some multiple alleged reasons, but came back and won another three straight titles. This lead him to be as many would say the Greatest of All Time.
Let’s not forget about our hometown favorites, the 76ers! They haven’t necessarily been the most successful franchises over the last 10 years, really ever since Allen Iverson left.
The Sixers early on had some rough patches, and of course, some relevance when Wilt Chamberlain came to town, he leads the Sixers to a 68-13 record. This time the 76ers beat the Celtics in five games. In-Game Five of that series, as the 76ers went to victory and the NBA Finals, Philadelphia fans chanted “Boston is dead!”—a symbol that the Celts’ eight-year reign as NBA champion had ended. Then came the unforgettable 82-83 season in which they went on to win the championship. The next years after was very disappointing to the organization and the fans then came along Charles Barkley, Barkley brought delight to the Philadelphia fans thanks to his humorous and sometimes controversial ways.
He was the most popular 76er for many years until the legend of Allen Iverson came along. He transcended basketball history forever, the league instituted a dress code because he was known as such a “bad boy” in the NBA. AI lead the sixers to many playoff pushes but was never able to get them over the hump. Today the Sixers have “The Process” with the new generation of players dribbling up and down the Wells Fargo Center
“The Process” has been a rebuilding tool that has seemed to work in favor of the Sixers. They decided that they would tank a few years in a row, get the top draft pick, and pick the best players available. They have been able to get quite the team together over the past few years with rising stars such as Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons. With those two centerpieces, they’ve been able to trade for other talents around them.
